What is Eco-tourism to Sri Lanka?

Eco-tourism in Sri Lanka

Ecotourism is the best growing component in the tourism industry nowadays. Most of the hotels in Sri Lanka promote this sustainable use of this concept nowadays to attract new tourists. When it comes to Sri Lankan tourism, we think that it's all about mesmerize beaches, breathtaking forest views and some exciting adventures without think about its protection. But in this eco-tourism allow us to immerse ourselves into the environment and their cultures without making any damages to them.

First of all it's important to know about what is eco-tourism?  Eco tourism is totally based on nature tourism in which the main motivation of the tourists is to observation and appreciation of nature as well as the traditional cultures prevailing in natural areas. This eco-tourism mainly focusses on the eco friendliness, long term sustainability, energy serving, water conservation, sustainable sourcing, exploring wildlife without harming them and many more.

As a cultural and traditional based country, Sri Lanka used to promote this eco-tourism in many ways over the past few years. However, the analytics said that arrivals of eco-tourists to Sri Lanka have been less than 1% over the last decades. There are different reasons for this issue from different aspects.

One of the main problems is that the misuse of the original meaning of the eco-tourism. It’s not only the tourism developers who misuse this eco-tourism concept but also the authors of journals, books as well as bloggers who are now used to tarnish the true meaning of the eco-tourism. Costa Rica, Norway, Kenya, Indonesia, United States are some of the main countries that are on the top priority list which promote their eco-tourism industry to the world as it is without damaging the proper meaning. Most of the Sri Lankan hoteliers and tourism developers only think about their pockets without the true meaning of it. But they promote this valuable concept for the sake of money without adding its true features to them.

Let’s dig into some more important details about the eco-tourism

Principles of Eco-tourism

New dimension to tourism industry is added by this eco-tourism concept which protect the mother nature, culture, and improve the life of local community. Selected sites, locations or the entire geological areas are conserve for tourists and locals to visit and appreciate that as a nature gifted beauty. Walking through a rain forest that doesn’t means the correct usage of eco-tourism. Unless it helps to improve the life of local people and raises benefits to that environment.

In the time of COVID 19 pandemic, every single country in the world paused their tourism industry to control it. But at the movement, most of the countries in the world restart their tourism industry step by step with the appropriate safety precautions. As a result of that, Now Sri Lanka is also open for tourism as well. But in the years ahead Sri Lanka can’t expect millions of tourists visit Sri Lanka as a large group. Most of the Western Europe and the Asia-Pacific region tourists prefer to travel to Sri Lanka as small groups which is similar to free individual travellers. They always prefer to take care of their mental health, physical health, safety rather than just taking their foreign tours. When they’re travelling most probably, they avid big coaches and crowded places. And also, they would like to stay in calm, locally owned accommodations like eco-resorts, eco-lodges, nature cabanas, home stays etc rather than staying in five star crowded hotels in Colombo area. Bird watching, exploring wildlife and nature, Spiritual activities like yoga, meditation, learning Buddhism, experiencing Sinhala Ayurveda, Agro tourism are some of the most preferred activities they would like to experience during these kinds of eco-tours. As well as the most favourite thing is to try the Sri Lankan traditional cuisines with the experience of cooking.

As a developing country, it’s proper to take necessary actions to promote and develop this valuable concept in order to attract eco-tourists to Sri Lanka. Because of that there’re some principles which need be considered when it comes to eco-tourism development.

  • ·       Conservation of environment
  • ·       Design and construction of facilities for the lowest possible impact to the  environment
  • ·       Integrate with the natural and cultural environment
  • ·       Minimize physical, social, behavioural and psychological impact
  • ·       Build environmental and cultural awareness
  • ·       Provide positive experiences for all tourists
  • ·       Produce direct financial benefits for conservation
  • ·       Financial benefits to local people

By considering all these principles, it is important to ensure that all the visitors must leave only their footprints on the environment rather than leaving them destroyed. Travel to an eco-tourism destination is known as visiting an alive eco system. Because of that it is better to identify it's features and behaviours to protect them without damaging. To encourage the eco-tourism in hotels, resorts, lodges, restaurants, it's better to use recycled recourses for the construction as well as for the maintenance.

In Sri Lanka, eco-tourism is most famous in rural areas in order to supply best eco-tourism experiences to the eco tourists. There are some of the eco-resorts, eco-lodges, eco-spa, eco-restaurants which provides best environmentally friendly experiences to tourists by immerse in the nature. Benefits of Eco tourism

Thera are lots of benefits from the concept of eco-tourism if it’s possible to implement it correctly. Deforestation, Air pollution, Water pollution are at the peak of the environmental pollution in Sri Lanka nowadays. Apart form that it’s better to try to implement this eco-tourism concept to protect mother land from this environmental pollution due to globalization. Sri Lakan Ecotourism foundation carried out a survey in 2009 and according to the statistics from that 80% of the tourists are arriving in Sri Lanka are not up-market tourists. Most of them are from multi-national tour packages which generate and market on the budget tour packages in west, China, India etc. They keen to spend their vacation maximum 7-14 days by travelling to mesmerized places without spending lot of money. They average spend 60-70USD per day while that up-market eco tourists spend 250-300usd per day. On the other hand, this budget travellers stick on the budget and not willing to support to local community. But these eco-tourists or free individual travellers always keen to travel to a rural area, staying in locally owned accommodation and support local village community while observing the environment. Apart from these advantages some of the other benefits are listed below:

Are there actual Eco-Resorts in Sri Lanka now?

Are there actual Eco-Resorts in Sri Lanka now?

Sri Lanka is considered as one of the most significant islands in South Asia regarding its natural beauty.  In this small island tourism takes prominent place when it comes to the foreign exchanges and provision of employment opportunities. During some of the unpredictable times like Easter Sunday bomb attack, Covid-19 Pandemic, tourism industry collapsed. But at the moment it's developing day by day.  As a result of the current development in the country, lots of industries got changed. But the tourism industry got changed to another different way. Local and foreign people always seek for the natural environmental beauty to take a break from their busy lifestyle. They tend to take their break peacefully without disturbing to the wildlife and nature as well.

Ecotourism is the latest way of development in local tourism in Sri Lanka. That means people tend to make their resorts, hotels along with the natural beauty in the nature rather than destroying them. Rather than going into a hotel in the city of Colombo with the busy traffic and honking noises at the office hours, tourists love to enjoy their day on a resort which has calm and peaceful environment attached with the beauty of nature. Eco resorts are built without cutting down big trees. Instead, they build the hotel around that tree to use that tree as a gorgeous element to enhance the beauty. This is becoming the most advantageous way for the Sri Lankan hotel owners to gain tourist attraction to Sri Lanka nowadays. And this method helps to reduce the deforestation going in the world. Most of the hotel owners tend to be considered to make eco resorts instead of normal hotels, resorts and restaurants.

Yes, there are actual Eco-resorts in Sri Lanka now to contribute their service to the Sri Lankan tourism industry. Most of them are located in rural areas and there are lots of categories which we can identify according to their facilities and prices as well. They mainly considered about the renewable energy sources, recycling services, eco-friendly toiletries, energy efficient lightning, locally sources food items, organic linens, non-toxic cleaning supplies, water conservation methods and various other sustainability focused initiatives to accomplish the ecotourism in Sri Lanka. Not only natural or environmental values but also cultural values also be enhanced in eco-tourism. Tourists love to learn about country specific cultural habits when they come to the land. In this method, tourists can see and experience the natural and cultural sceneries and gain more knowledge about them.

Here are some of the most attractive Eco resorts in Sri Lanka.

1). Jetwing Vil Uyana

Jetwing Hotels are one of the most popular hotel chains in Sri Lanka. They have built their hotels in a more eco-friendly way compared to the other hotels. Jetwing Vil Uyana is known to be the first manmade nature reserve created in Sri Lanka. And it has been praised for the combination of forest and wetland system architecture that has been used in building the resort. It is obvious that they have tried to minimize the destruction of natural elements in order to build the resort. This glorious nature reserve stands at 28 acres but 17acres of that land is forested land and 7 acres of that land is being used for harvesting and vegetable farming. Tourists are able to see number of things including Sigiriya, manmade lakes, beautiful forest with native species and farms by choosing this hotel as their stay.

Wildlife species including butterflies, fish, reptiles, birds and mammals can be discovered while staying at the resort as well. This is another attraction method for the tourists who love to do nature photography. Recently the hotel is using cinnamon wood fed stoves instead of fuel derived gas appliances to minimize the hotel kitchen greenhouse gas emissions.

2). Heritance Kandalama

This elegant stay is another great example of eco-resorts in Sri Lanka. The famed visionary architect Geoffrey Bawa is the legend behind this nature friendly design. Under the hotel, water and animals can travel unharmed as the hotel is bult on stilts. Jungle vines are also growing over the hotel façade which makes it more greenly looking hotel. Minimalistic interior of the hotel with traditional furniture and cultural elements gives the visitors a better understanding and knowledge about the country’s history. Nothing is more refreshing than waking up in the morning in hotel Kandalama with hearing birds chipping, rustling sounds of tree leaves, chattering sounds of monkeys and elegant views of sunrise will give you next level refreshment in the morning. And this hotel uses many nature friendly facilities inside the hotel such as they use their own wastewater and filter them to irrigate its own extensive gardens. And they use renewable energy sources such as solar panels as an eco-friendly method to generate power for the hotel.

Tourists have number of activity options to chose including bird watching, nature trails, fishing tours, night drives and many other nature related activities. Wildlife travelers will enjoy this unique glamping experience by engaging with forest surroundings and the conceptual design of this resort. There are plenty of dining experiences as well. In Lakeside breakfast you can take breakfast near the Nimalawa lake and in Dine on a rock you will be taken to a top of a rock where you can enjoy view of the nature and sounds of the nature while you enjoy your cuisine.

Relaxation is one other main factor to consider if you are willing to go to this retreat. You can do yoga or meditation with peace of mind by listening to the calming sounds from the nature. Traditional “Govi gedara” dining will be your favourite Sri Lankan cuisine experience you will ever try. There is a Sri Lankan cookery class as an activity that travelers can join to learn the art of Sri Lankan cooking styles.

In my point of view this will become the pioneer in tourism field in the near future. As one of the most beautiful islands in south Asia, this eco-resort concept will be become the major way of attracting the foreign exchange income to the Sri Lanka. So let's try to engage to expand our ecotourism as much as we can and try to promote it on our social media as we can.
